The Forged Will
๐ The Chairmanโs Study ยท Daesan Estate ยท Seongbuk-dong, Seoul ยท Dawn
A chaebol founder is dead of โheart failure,โ and by sunrise a brand-new will sits warm in his study printer โ cutting out the daughter he trained for thirty years. The signature survives every forensic test. The Korean does not. Somewhere in that document the forger did something no human being has ever done in the history of the language: bowed to themselves. Your partner needs you to find the bow.

What we know
Found in his armchair at dawn, tea at his elbow, no sign of struggle. Cause of death: digitalis at four times the therapeutic dose โ initially certified as cardiac arrest. In the printer: a will dated 11:30 PM transferring Daesan Group to his nephew. The signature is authentic. The autopsy says murder. The will says he expected to die. Only one of those documents is telling the truth โ your partner intends to prove which.

"Everyone keeps repeating that the signature is his. Fine โ itโs his. But nobody signs a document into existence, detective; somebody WRITES it, and written Korean confesses in every ending. Put the will beside the manโs own diary. The diary is blunt as a hammer. The will bows โ ๋์๊ฐ์ ํ, ์ฐ์ธ โ bows TO THE MAN WHO SUPPOSEDLY WROTE IT. Dead men donโt bow to themselves. Find me the person who bows out of habit."

Suspect Files
Four Suspects
Read each alibi carefully. Cross-reference with the linguistic clues in your notebook.
Four heirs to a fortune, one impossible document. Follow the deference: the will describes its own author with ๋์๊ฐ์๋ค and ์ฐ์ธ โ grammar reserved for someone ABOVE you. The diary proves the Chairman never wrote about himself that way; the nephewโs contempt proves he couldnโt have; the lawyerโs drafts use different formulas entirely. One suspect has bowed in writing every day for thirty years โ and her emails bow in exactly the same places as the will.

The Linguistic Proof
The will refers to its own author with ๋์๊ฐ์ ํ and ์ฐ์ธ โ honorific forms that are grammatically impossible in self-reference. Thirty years of writing ํ์ฅ๋๊ป์โฆํ์ จ์ต๋๋ค built a reflex Moon Jung-hee could not switch off even while forging his voice: she bowed to the Chairman inside his own will. Her emails share the documentโs every habit โ the honorific subject, the reflexive deference, the bureaucratic ๊ธ์ผ โ and the diaryโs blunt ๋ด๊ฐ ์ฃฝ์ผ๋ฉด proves the Chairman himself never bowed to anyone, least of all himself.
